The history of Westchester's premier real estate firm
Sotheby’s fine arts auction house was founded in 1744, and quickly earned a reputation as a renowned marketer of some of the world’s most valuable and prestigious possessions. Sotheby’s built this brand equity as much on exceptional service to clients as on the notable art, antiques, jewelry and other holdings handled by Sotheby’s auction locations around the world.
Julia B. Fee founded her namesake firm in 1953 with a staff of one – herself. Ahead of her time and a dedicated professional, she built a successful real estate firm while working tirelessly for local organizations and causes. Julia B. Fee's business philosophy of an unmatched service experience and community expertise lives on at the firm today.
In 1976, Sotheby’s International Realty was formed when Sotheby’s recognized the need to offer their clients a complete package of estate services and marketing. Sotheby’s International Realty was founded on the same commitment to exceptional service that characterized the fine arts auction house.
Over the course of 30 years, Julia B. Fee expanded their offices throughout Lower Westchester County, and became a household name. Continuing to provide unmatched service and expertise, the firm became the premier local brand in the Scarsdale, Larchmont and Rye areas.
In October 2005, Julia B. Fee Real Estate purchased Burbank Whittemore, expanding their local niche in Larchmont. With the acquisition of Burbank Whittemore, whose local roots date back to 1935, Julia B. Fee became the leader of the stunning Sound Shore area. Jim Whittemore, former partner of Burbank Whittemore, continued his illustrious career, becoming Vice President and Brokerage Manager of Julia B. Fee’s Larchmont Brokerage.
In 2006, the local and global brands of Julia B. Fee Real Estate and Sotheby’s International Realty merged to accommodate an international real estate market. This combined the marketing strengths of both firms, giving clients the advantage of both local expertise and a truly global reach.
Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty offers a comprehensive approach to selling property that is unmatched in the industry. Year after year, regardless of market conditions, the firm’s proprietary tools and techniques have proven successful in selling property in a range of prices, styles and locations. In 2006, the firm’s Westchester agents sold over $1 billion of real estate in Westchester County.
In October 2009, Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty joined the regional force of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty and Litchfield Hills Sotheby’s International Realty, under the leadership of Paul Breunich.
Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty, combined with partner firms William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty and Litchfield Hills Sotheby’s International Realty, is now the largest Sotheby’s International Realty affiliate globally, the third-fastest-growing real estate company nationally, and the 23rd-largest real estate company by sales volume in the United States. With the global reach of the Sotheby’s International Realty brand representing buyers and sellers of fine real estate in more than 44 countries and territories, we provide marketing exposure that no other firm can offer.
